There is something magical about sitting down with a glass of red wine and a notebook and plotting out your travel bucket list for the year. But in 2018, we’re trying something a little different.
Instead of clicking through to Lonely Planet, we’re letting the actual planets pick our travel destinations for us. Forget magical; this is downright mystical.
With a little help from AstroStyle’s zodiac profiles, we’ve picked out a travel hotspot for every sign – from the wild landscape of Botswana to the creative cultural hub of Ubud. Whether you’re ready to let your horoscope lead the way or you’re merely on the lookout for new location inspiration, we suggest you keep reading and start dreaming.
Baja California, Mexico
Destination: The Baja Divide Trail, Baja California, Mexico
Aries are the trendsetting trailblazers of the zodiac. They are fiercely competitive, focused, and love physical and mental tests. Thus, we picked out the Baja Divide for the Aries sign. The Baja Divide is a brand-new, 1,700-mile bike-packing route that runs down the length of the Baja California. Beginning in San Diego (USA) and ending in San José del Cabo (Mexico), you’ll quickly check every box on your list.
Milford Sound, New Zealand
Destination: New Zealand
Tauruses love to indulge in good wine, great food and even better views, but they also need stability – and that’s where New Zealand comes in. It’s one of the safest countries for female travellers, but there’s plenty of ways to enjoy life’s pleasures – whether that means heading to the Marlborough wine region, chowing down on New Zealand’s famous fish and chips, or taking in the views of Milford Sound.
New Orleans, USA
Destination: New Orleans, USA
Geminis deserve a travel destination as quirky and singular as they are. The perfect match? New Orleans. This year, New Orleans turns 300 years old, and you can be reasonably sure the city will live up to its motto – “let the good times roll” – as it celebrates with art shows, book festivals, fireworks and more throughout the year. Add these festivities to elements the Big Easy is known for – think jazz music, Cajun food and Mardi Gras, to name just a few – and you’ve found the perfect hotspot for the Gemini.
Caminito, a street museum in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Destination: Buenos Aires, Argentina
Cancer’s love their creature comforts and staying close to home. But when they venture out, they don’t do anything by halves. For that reason, we’ve chosen Buenos Aires in Argentina as this year’s must-see foreign destination for Cancers. Buenos Aires plays host to three major events this year: the inaugural Art Basel Cities program (a significant drawcard for art-lovers); the Youth Olympic Games; and the G20 summit. If like most Cancer’s, you love art, galleries, one-of-a-kind shopping, tango, and great food, Buenos Aires is a no-brainer.
Destination: Valetta, Malta
Leos love drama, romance and theatrics, so where better to head this year than Valetta, the capital of Malta? Why, you ask? Valetta has plenty that will appeal to the passionate Leo. The historic walled city (a UNESCO World Heritage site, incidentally) is surrounded by azure waters dotted with boats. Your Instagram will thank you for the views alone. Plus, this year, Valetta is the official European Capital of Culture, which means there will be year-round celebrations of art, opera, dance, music and more.
A giraffe in Botswana.
Happy, energetic Virgos need hands-on experiences that feed the soul mentally and physically. With that in mind, a trip to Botswana is in order. Here, you can head out on safari and see elephants, lions and rhinos in the wild, to name just a few. You can also do your bit for the planet by staying at places – such as Abu Camp – that promote wildlife conservation. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that at Abu Camp you can sleep out under the stars right next door to an elephant encampment. Yes, elephant encampment.
Johannesburg, South Africa
Destination: South Africa
Libras love balance and harmony, and South Africa can offer both. You can indulge your adventurous side with surfing, mountain hiking, and visits to wildlife sanctuaries. Then, you can balance it all out with a visit to the Boland, the country’s wine-making area. On top of all this, 2018 is the year Nelson Mandela would have turned 100, so South Africa is spending the year celebrating his incredible legacy with a year-long program of events such as bike races, debating competitions and music festivals.
Seoul, South Korea
Destination: South Korea
South Korea offers plenty of drawcards for Scorpios, who thrive on one-of-a-kind experiences. Seoul, a spectacle in its own right, has just opened a soaring high-line park, Seoul Skygarden, packed with cafes, bars and exhibitions. There’s also Pyeongchang, which is currently playing host to the 2018 Winter Olympics. Last, but by no means least, a wide variety of food options to suit every taste – all of which can be experienced at the annual Namdo Food Festival towards the end of the year. Calling all foodies!
Kyoto Prefecture, Japan
Sagittarius is known as the most adventurous sign of the zodiac, always up for something different. This year, the Sagittarius should add Japan to the foreign travel bucket list. In Tokyo, you can experience karaoke, 24/7 culture, neon lights, and forward-thinking. Then, you can head out of the city to the Minakami area where you can partake in adventure sports such as grade 4 rafting, canyoning and bungee jumping. For the Sagittarius that wants it all, you can be sure that Japan has it all.
Destination: Melbourne, Australia
Capricorns have plenty of ambition and love setting goals. When travelling, that translates to go big or go home, right? That’s why we’ve picked Melbourne, Australia, for all you Capricorns. Unless you’re already in Australia, getting to Melbourne will require a pretty epic journey. But on the other end of your flight, you’ll be treated to sporting events, cosmopolitan cuisine, street art, first-class shopping, art galleries – and that’s just to start. Hey, Melbourne isn’t considered the world’s most liveable city for nothing.
Monteverde, Costa Rica
Destination: Costa Rica
Here are a few things Costa Rica can offer the Aquarius traveller: hiking, ziplining, surfing, yoga, and wild animals. But since the Aquarius loves a cause, we’d suggest you head straight to the Jaguar Rescue Centre near Puerto Viejo. There, you can visit with an orphaned howler monkey, stroke a baby ocelot (be still our beating hearts), or get up close and personal with an injured jaguar. If you want to embrace your humanitarian instincts entirely, you can even volunteer for four weeks and work with the animals day-to-day.
Destination: Ubud, Indonesia
Long considered the cultural capital of Bali, Ubud is the perfect destination for the Pisces dreamer. Here, you can buy artisanal works, indulge in some of Bali’s best restaurants, visit the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary and pamper yourself at a wellness spa – all in a day. In the evening, you can settle in and watch the sun come down over the rice paddies, before getting up to do it all again the next day.
